Rio admits being drunk playing for West Ham

Was all over the place that game.

“I was at West Ham and I was in the squad and did not get changed, so went up to the bar and had three brandy and cokes,” Ferdinand told The Mo Gilligan Podcast. “Then the kit man came and said ‘you’ve got to get changed’... as I had a brandy and coke in my hand.

“So I was like, oh. I put it down and have had three brandy and cokes and need to go play at Highbury. What’s going on?

“My first appearance at Highbury; I was 17, 18. So I went downstairs and was asked, ‘Are you alright?’ - I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m fine’ and I was right, I’m buzzing!

“Next thing, Paulo Futre walked out as he left because he wasn’t No.10. He looked at the numbers saw he wasn’t No.10 and walked out.

“[West Ham manager] Harry Redknapp was like, ‘We’ll sort it out next week, Paulo, we’ll change it, we’ll sort it.’

“Paulo just got in a taxi and went home. He left Highbury before a ball had been kicked.

"So I was brought down into the squad and then I came on. I was on the bench thinking please don’t bring me on. Three brandy and cokes, I can’t come on this pitch. I can’t come on and make an example of myself.

“So I went on for about 15 minutes.”

West Ham were beaten 2-0, with Ferdinand entering the play with the Hammers already two behind.

Underage drinking as well, i hope the FA take note that Arsenal were serving young Rio Brandy and cokes as 17?

Surely merits some kind of action or ban in retrospect in this fucked up PC world thats obsessed with writing the wrongs of the past.

Mmm would be very surprised if this was true and not a story for clout - he was always out at envy and Epping country club once in first team, but was playing well.

Not sure the 17 year old did that on the first weekend of the season at Highbury - sounds like he’s nicked a Ray Parlour story.

Recall the story was that Moncur swapped to shirt 16 for the next game & let Futre have 10.

Futre was an absolute waste of space who came to us on a free (Bosman) started 4 game and came on in another 5 then retired.

No doubt there was a backhander in it for he who shall not be named.

Well if he was then we need more players to admit it,

Trouble is 60 years of watching West Ham, I can list 50 - 100 players who I thought must be drunk they were that bad.

Greaves was an alcoholic when he played for us so was probably drunk most games.

Players would sometimes have a nip of brandy before they went out or at half time in the OLDEN days so Rio should stop being a big girls blouse.

Seem to remember Phil Parkes liked a touch of brandy before the game. Seem to remember one story I think on the flight to a tour John Lyall told Phil he wouldn't be playing in the first game so Parksey had a bit too much to drink on the flight. As a "punishment" Lyall played him in the game and he had a bit of a mare letting in an easy one. Lyall asked how he conceded so easily at half time, knowing full well why, and Parkes apparently answered "well I did try diving for two of the balls out of the three I could see!"
